Summer learning loss is the loss of academic skills and knowledge over summer vacation. Studies show specific amounts of loss (usually measured in months of achievement) in specific grade levels and content areas.
Information that should be retained over summer vacation is vital prerequisite material to future courses. When it occurs, summer learning loss becomes a contributing factor to course failure.
As a solution, school are implementing Education 2020 as an opportunity for credit recovery.
Education 2020 case studies show that a significant number of schools utilizing Education 2020 as the core curriculum have solidly outperformed other schools.

Nice job on your podcast. Since you are not in the classroom you cannot implement e2020. In your final paper, you will want to talk about how if you were in the classroom you would implement it this summer. For your evaluation you will want to create something to evaluate the program's success. Maybe some of the schools who are using it already have a tool that you could write about.
ReplyDeleteDo you think this program will make a difference? Are the schools seeing a difference in achievement? Make sure to talk about this in your final paper.
This seems like an excellent resource for secondary education. After briefly looking over Education 2020 case studeies, it is clear that from their reports, this program is assisting students in high school to become successful learners through virtual classrooms. It will be interesting to see how this program can make a difference and how you might use it to prevent summer learning loss.
ReplyDeleteI had difficulty listening to your podcast but that could have been an issue on my end. Through this assignment I discovered that blogger is great for blogging but not really set up for podcasting. Even when I followed the google instructions it still didn't work properly.
ReplyDeleteThis sounds like a really useful software. Since this is a passion of yours, it would be interesting if you could find a school district to work with an actually have the chance to see the software in use (often times quirks don't appear until you actually use something and then you are able to see the disadvantages as well as the advantages).
Great job so far.
Well I had to burst the bubble here, but Mason Summit High School is not showing success with this E2020 solution.
ReplyDeleteCurrently of their 5 math classes, only a handful of studens are currently passing. Unfortunately no real success has been achieved for the masses.
Failure is most likely due to how it was introduced to the students.
Hopefully the administration will go back to the drawing board this Summer, and evaluate when and how it will introduce E2020 courses to its students.
The leading reason for failure is how Mason has continued to hand off its failing studends to the next level, even if they have failed in the teacher led classes. Mason seems to think it will find success by placing a student in front of an automated led math class, without the having achieved the foundamentals first.
The district has set itself and my children up for failure, by improperly launching the E2020 program.
E2020 is not strong enough to stand on its own two feet, and should only be used as a tool not a complete solution. Unfortunately they terminated their math teacher in place of E2020 at the end of 2009, and are now over tasking the one teacher with 5 preps.
Its really too bad, E2020 has potential, unfortunately Mason has allowed the $ to dictate how my child gets educated.
If your looking for a success story in Mason, look elsewhere...
